Justice Alice Robie Resnick and her Toledo attorney Sheldon Wittenberg. Ohio Supreme Court Justice Alice Robie Resnick will submit to a three-day drunken-driver intervention program rather than spend time behind bars, her attorney said yesterday. A day after Justice Resnick was convicted of drunken driving, Toledo attorney Sheldon Wittenberg said the 65-year-old Ottawa Hills resident hasn't decided on a time or place for the program, but 'she's not going to jail.' Justice Resnick pleaded guilty on Monday to driving drunk and outside marked lanes Jan. 31 on her way to Columbus. 'She will definitely do the treatment,' Mr. Wittenberg said.

'As to when and where, she'll do it in conformance with the court's order.' Under Ohio law, first-time DUI offenders are required to pay fines, temporarily forfeit their driver's licenses, and spend either three days in jail or in a state-certified intervention program. Judge Mark Reddin of Bowling Green Municipal Court fined Justice Resnick, suspended her license for six months, placed her on probation, and said she could complete her program at Nazareth Hall near Grand Rapids. If Justice Resnick decides on the Nazareth Hall program, she can expect to face hours of group counseling, class work, and alcohol-abuse screening.

'We keep them busy from the minute they come in,' said Pat Feeley, who coordinates the driver intervention program operated by Behavioral Connections of Wood County.

'We provide education and we give them an opportunity to look at the act itself, then get them to look at changes they can make in their behavior so it doesn't happen again.' The Nazareth program includes a screening process to determine if offenders have serious problems with alcohol and drunken driving. Justice Resnick, who was elected to the high court in 1988, has said she has struggled with alcoholism. She was pulled over in Bowling Green after motorists called 911 to report that her 2001 state-owned Jeep Grand Cherokee was weaving while southbound I-75 about 1:30 p.m.

Feeley said there is little variation in the information offered at programs statewide and most programs, including Nazareth, have a component that focuses on the long-term impact of drunken driving on offenders and victims, usually through videos. 'Don't think for a minute that anybody can't use some additional information on drinking and driving and alcohol abuse,' Mr. 'Anybody would benefit from this.' In addition to standard sentencing, judges in Lucas County often require DUI offenders to attend presentations with the Victim Impact Panel, a group of people who have been impacted by drunken driving crimes.

The panel, organized by the Lucas County Traffic Safety/Safe Communities Program, meets monthly. Greater Toledo Area Mothers Against Drunk Driving offers speakers for some Northwest Ohio intervention programs, said Debbie Holmes, a victims advocate for the local chapter. 'The response from these people are tremendous,' she said. Gate keepers 21 ep 1 eng dub. '[The offenders] sit there and cry. They will tell us they didn't realize what could happen, the injuries.'
