Marquette

I'm thinking about buying an old Marquette Redi-Arc welder. $30 is the asking price for the machine with nothing else. This will be my first welder. I have been learning O/A welding for about 6 months, working on small projects around the house. The guy selling it sent a small picture, it doesn't really show the taps well. He said it goes up to 180 amps.

My question, is what is the low range of this unit? Some of the material I've been experimenting with is 1/16 to 1/8' thick.

Will I just burn through with this stick welder? I doubt I'll be working with anything thicker than 1/4'. Since this does not come with cables, I'll need to buy or make some up. Are all welding cable connections a standard type of plug, or are there any proprietary types out there (particularly on an old machine like this one)? So I'll need to buy 50 feet of cable, a work clamp, an electrode holder, and two plugs to go into the machine. And I need to add the 220V breaker and an outlet in my shop.

Fortunately, the welder will be sitting directly below my electric subpanel. Total cost of getting this $30 welder up and running?

I'm guessing $175. Another option I'm considering is a 45-100 amp, 220V stick welder from Homier with a $5 flip-front hood.

Total cost to be up and (sort of)running? $55 plus shipping. Do you guys think this old welder is worth it or should I look elsewhere? Keep in mind this is a hobby that I don't have a lot of time or money to spend on now. Whatever I get, will see minimal use. Thanks for your insight!

Chris Heck, for $30 what have ya got to lose.for a ground clamp and stinger with cabels. See ebay.you'll probably pay more for shipping, than your winning bid as of late. Some stuff doesn't even get any bids.OOPs sorry, I forgot 'our economy is roaring'.Right.

A set of #4 battery cables 'the new wire' will probably carry more currant then old #2 weld cables Measure your tap holes 'if you buy it' if they are Hybrids.probably not. I'll make you a set pegs at cost. I think those (marquette) were sort of drag around.kick around shipyard welders. Likely take ordinary cables. Copper wire is BEASTLY expensive right now, I'd try getting along with shorter ground & work cables but I would go with the old Marquette for sure.
